Service of process in Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad is the most industrial economy in the English-speaking Caribbean, and the instructions reflect it: energy-sector disputes, commercial claims, shipping and insurance matters, alongside the ordinary run of family and debt work. Cerwin runs this desk and lives on the island.

If what you have is not on this list, ask. We will tell you plainly whether it can properly be served here.

Traffic, districts and the Tobago crossing

Three practical things shape the timescale here, and none of them appear on a map.

The first is traffic. The east–west corridor and the highway south to San Fernando can turn a twenty-mile journey into two hours at the wrong time of day, which is why we plan attempts around the traffic rather than around office hours.

The second is addressing. Outside the main towns an address is often a village, a road and a landmark rather than a number — “the second house past the temple” is a real and usable address here if you know the village. It is not usable from a desk in New York, which is the whole point of having somebody local.

The third is Tobago. It is a separate island, reached by flight or ferry, so an attempt there is a day of travel. We price that into the fixed fee and tell you the date before you commit.

Corporate addresses on the industrial estates usually have controlled access and a security post. That is manageable, but it needs the exact registered name of the company and the name and title of the person to be served — a document tendered to a gatehouse is not service.

Timing, and what comes back to you

Trinidad is usually a matter of days for a reachable address. Tobago depends on the flight or ferry schedule. Where the address needs verifying first, we say so before we attempt rather than after.

  • A court-ready Affidavit or Certificate of Service, sworn locally
  • A record of every attempt — date, time, address and who was spoken to
  • A description of the person served and the circumstances of the handover
  • Photographs of the location where lawful and practical
  • Progress updates by email or WhatsApp while the matter is live
  • A reasoned report if service cannot be effected, with what we established about the true address
  • A single point of contact who knows your file, start to finish

Why instruct us in Trinidad and Tobago

Because the desk is run by somebody who lives there, drives those roads and knows which village a landmark address belongs to. We are not forwarding your file to a stranger.

And because on the commercial matters — energy, shipping, insurance — we will tell you before we attempt whether the person named is genuinely at that estate or office, or whether we are being sent to a gatehouse.

English throughout. Ask us about the correct service route before you send, and we will tell you whether personal service by us is the right method for your document or whether it needs to travel by a formal channel. Either way we handle it, and you keep one point of contact.
