The coastal strip, the corporate boom, and the interior
Almost everyone in Guyana lives on a narrow coastal strip. That is where the work is, and where it is straightforward.
Georgetown, New Amsterdam, Linden and the coastal villages have usable addresses — a lot number, a street, a village and a region — and the country is common-law and English-speaking, so your documents generally need no translation and read the way a US firm expects.
The corporate side has grown quickly with the oil sector, and it comes with a familiar difficulty: a great many companies operating here are foreign entities with a local branch, a project office or an agent. Serving the site office of a contractor is not necessarily serving the entity named in your complaint. Send us the exact registered name, the officer you need, and what your court requires, and we will tell you whether the address you hold delivers it. Project sites and compounds also have controlled access, so those attempts are planned round shifts rather than office hours.
Behind the coast the country is rainforest and savannah, reached by river or light aircraft. Some interior addresses are achievable with planning and a realistic timescale; others we will decline to quote for rather than take your money. And there is heavy emigration to New York and Toronto, so a reasoned finding that your defendant has already left is a common and proper result.
Guyanese emigration to the United States and Canada is substantial. If your address predates your file by a year or more, let us confirm the person is still in the country before anyone attends.
Timing, and what comes back to you
Georgetown and the coastal regions are usually days once an address is confirmed. Interior work is quoted individually, with an honest timescale rather than an optimistic one, and we will say plainly when we think an address is not worth attempting.
