Service of process in the Cayman Islands

Cayman work is overwhelmingly corporate. Nine times in ten the address we are given is a registered office in George Town — a law firm or a corporate services provider holding the registered office of a fund, an exempted company or an SPV that has no staff and no premises of its own.

Registered offices: what actually happens at the counter

A registered office will usually accept a document properly tendered. Getting that right matters more in Cayman than almost anywhere else we work.

The building will be a professional office with a reception desk, and the entity you are suing will be one of several hundred on the plaque. What we need from you is the exact registered name as it appears on the register, and the entity’s registration number if you have it. A trading name or an abbreviated name gives the person at the desk a reason to say they have no such client.

Where you are serving a named individual — a director, a trustee, an authorised representative — tell us which capacity you are serving them in, because that determines whether the registered office is the right place at all, or whether we should be at a residence in West Bay or on Seven Mile Beach instead.

If your document must be served on the entity itself rather than on an officer, and the entity is a fund with no employees, tell us the proceeding it relates to. That is usually the fastest way for us to establish who can properly accept it.

Timing, and what comes back to you

Grand Cayman is generally quick — George Town is compact and the registered offices keep ordinary business hours. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman depend on the inter-island flight schedule, and we will give you a date before you commit.

  • A court-ready Affidavit or Certificate of Service, sworn locally
  • A record of every attempt — date, time, address and who was spoken to
  • A description of the person served and the circumstances of the handover
  • Photographs of the location where lawful and practical
  • Progress updates by email or WhatsApp while the matter is live
  • A reasoned report if service cannot be effected, with what we established about the true address
  • A single point of contact who knows your file, start to finish

Why instruct us in Cayman

Because we have spent thirty-plus years in the region and we know that a Cayman corporate serve stands or falls on the exact registered name, the capacity being served, and a person at the counter who is willing to take the document rather than look for a reason not to.

And because if we think a serve will not hold up — wrong entity name, wrong capacity, wrong address — we will say so before we charge you, not after.

English throughout. Ask us about the correct route before you send: the Hague Service Convention was extended to the Cayman Islands by the United Kingdom, and we will tell you whether personal service by us suits your document or whether it should go through the central authority.
